It's officially summer....

Another hot year at the Del Mar Fair...no, I cannot get used to calling it the San Diego County Fair, it's too long! Jay took the day off so that we could go on a Friday morning. We were one of the first in line. Not even 10:00am and I had to sit down because I was already feeling faint. While we were waiting to get in, we were being entertained by the San Marcos High School cheerleaders. They were "cheering" us as we walked in and I enthusiastically yelled..."Hey, we're from San Marcos too." and they all looked at me like, "Okay, whatever!" (a la Clueless) I felt old...I thought I was still cool, oh well.

Our first stop was to the animals since the girls were asking to feed them. I tell you what...it really stinks in that place. Sofia was apprehensive at first, but once she realized that they were all behind fences this year, she was okay. Ava, on the other hand, had no fear and approached and fed them all. She even held a baby chick. Since it was so hot, I really had no appetite at all. Usually I look forward to eating something fried and cheesy. My parents were also there that day, so we met up at one of the Chuck Wagon places and ate barbecue. The only thing I splurged on was a dipped ice cream bar with nuts. We actually rode rides this year...clarification: we bought many tickets but rode one ride many times...the carousel. And Sofia didn't want to ride on one of the horses that went up and down, so we sat on the stationary bench. Fine by me...it's the simple things. The picture in my head is that of Sofia sitting next to me, and Jay and Ava in the bench in front of us....(oooh.....just reminiscing about that and the heat and the carousel is making me dizzy as I type). Traditions...I love them....I've been going to the Fair every year since I was a little girl, and now my girls have gone every year since they've been alive (Ava was only a few weeks old when she went to the Fair in 2006). I'm still so bummed that they got rid of Fairest of the Fair...maybe there'll be a revival. Good thing they still have the Hobby Show, which is my favorite. And although it seems to get smaller year after year, I still love going to see what people collect. Not anything too out of the ordinary this year...my favorite was a collection of vintage San Diego Postcards. Bing Crosby Hall, Bags of Nuts, Joking over how we put a down payment on a spa and never went through with the purchase, Looking at the plant section that I used to hate when I was a little girl because I thought it was boring, Checking out our high school's current yearbook, deciding that it was too damn hot and we should get going.....Year after Year, Jay's and my Fair routine..... But one of the best things about the Fair...taking our annual photo booth picture.
