Sofia's Speech Therapy

It has already been a very long adventure getting Sofia to her first week of Speech Therapy. We started when she turned 2 years old, her pediatrician suggested that she get screened. At that time, her speech was very much age appropriate. So it was suggested that she come back when she turned 3. Up until that time, we did notice that Sofia wouldn't talk in full sentences and her vocabulary was very limited compared to others her age. So we brought her in for an assessment and just as we thought, she had a speech delay. I took a few parenting classes to help her, and we brought her yet to another therapist at Scripps Hospital - same outcome. Our final assessment was with the speech therapist at our local elementary school.

The good news is that all three therapists felt the same way....that Sofia had a slight speech delay that could be remedied with therapy. One of the therapists even said that it seemed as though Sofia really does know how to speak in sentences, she is just waiting to do it in her own time. That made me feel really good, but at the same time I thought, "wow, Sofia already knows how to work everyone"...she's not talking now because she knows that she doesn't really have to.

Fast forward to her first week of therapy. It's so cute because we have to bring her to the gate with her backpack and then all 3 of the teachers (3 teachers for 7 kids) come out to get the kids. Once the kids see the teachers coming, they all get so excited and start jumping with their huge backpacks. The first day I brought Sofia, I cried because she was so cute and as she was walking away from me, she kept looking back at me, waving and saying "bye, Mama!" She is growing up so fast. Love that girl!
